So

who wants my arm ?

Who wants my legs ?

Who wants my eye ?

Who wants my heart ?

Who wants my brain?

Who wants me ?

XXV the douche bag

It wasn’t a pleasant sight seeing a small limp boy held in the arms of 3 despicable rogues, Arvind knew a few of them, for he was their manipulator, he was confused, for he had not asked his boys to bring Daniel wet and looking drowned.

XXIV the outsiders

‘Coz they were the usual suspects, Arvind opened the door with an intention to chuck the disliked intruders – without much courtesy – but when he opened the door, the scene wasn’t what he thought it would be.

XXIII Who?

Arvind was the one who was the closest to the door , he, like everybody else in the room, looked at the door like it was some ‘burglar attack’, the group joined Arvind in his reaction, as he cursed and rushed towards the door ( everyone in the group condemned the audacity of those who had rang the bell and knocked at the door in such an uncivilised and crude manner ) all of them expected a cheap books sales pitch gang or a fish sales woman or some religious promotion group or an apartment neighbour’s wife with a special serving of her ‘Sunday food’ to be the perpetrators of such an intrusion - the ringing and knocking suddenly seemed very purposeful - it was a reaction, based on past events.

XXII The bell

Mr. James Mohandas Jesudasan, Danny’s father, was deeply immersed expounding some of his pet political views with some of the guest gathered at his small single bedroom apartment,  they were all sitting on a row of old, rusty aluminium chair that he had picked from the second hand flea market that often came up near the Mettiguda Church, every Sunday. Daniel’s mother Sarasuamma had put some boiled peanuts and some other fried stuff on a small table close by.

He was lean, short, a bit shabbily dressed and was approaching to be 35, he still looked young, was still very idealistic and an extremely well read man for his age.  Mr. Jesudasan held views that were considered radical for his modest, middle class background – the Indian middle class in the eighties was hugely different from the idea of an American middle class, the Indian middle class was still largely a class that could hardly afford anything good in life, they struggled most of their life and retired poorer even after putting 30 or 40 years of real hard work – the pious Christians around Mettiguda thought that Mr. Jesudasan was an atheist and spoke the language of the anti Christ, since he hardly attended the Sunday mass and often argued with the parish. But he was also known to be a man with a huge heart and tremendous generosity – qualities that were also a part of Daniel when he grew up.

To a certain extent the society’s feelings about Mohandas wasn’t far from the truth, he wasn’t really religious and had no reservations to air his views on the holy bible freely, most of the times they weren’t very holy or pleasant for the more devout – but they had to grudgingly give in to one fact - Jesudasan knew more details about the Genesis or the Bible or even many aspects of the Hindu scriptures and Buddhist philosophy than most people living in Mettiguda. Jesudasan could fluently speak in 7-8 native Indian languages and was quite an authority of English language and literature - but Sarsuamma felt his English grammar sometimes sucked, but, James often blamed it on lethologica.

Mr. Jesudasan’s source of knowledge did not just come from being a graduate of Literature at the Govt. Victotia College, Palakkad, in the state of Kerala, he was also a fiery Student leader espousing the ideas of Karl Marx, it had also been honed by being exposed to friends he had who were hippies and roadies with whom he had spent large amounts of time before he had been married , Danny had heard vague information about his father having run away to the Rajneesh Ashram at Poona when he was a little younger – just when he had miserably flunked in his 12th grade – and stayed away from his ancestral house in Palakkad for over 4-5 years.

His true source, his fountainhead of sorts, was his wife Sarsuamma.

Mohan and Sarsuamma in fact met in Pune before they got married.

She was a student of Contemporary Eastern philosophy, they often met and discussed Jiddu, UG, Aurobindo and Tagore at length. Of course they fell in love even if they weren’t sure if it was just their knowledge they admired or the fierce sexual energy they shared or the love of world cinema that they enjoyed at the film institute, Pune or the fact that both could play the guitar ( in fact Mohan could play several other instruments, he was a trained carnatic music vocalist ) and shared their love of music that ranged from the Indian classical , bollywood, tamil, Malayalam, Western Classical and rock music – Danny would later think that they had more than one reason to fall in love and equally enough reasons to slug it out, the violence that they sometimes displayed also seemed to express a sense of hatred so deep, it could only come out of people lost in love, a love of everything that they believed in , everything they stood for.

Mohan was currently also pursuing his Masters in World History and Comparative literature from the local Osmania University, through evening classes. Most of the friends Mohan, as his wife called him, invited home were from his academic fields, Mr. Jesudasan did have friends in the railways, where he was employed, but they were hardly invited home. Sarsu, as Mohan called her, was also pursuing her Phd., Danny wasn’t sure what her thesis was, but it had something to do with a differentiation between Western and Eastern political thought, she had already completed her Mphil. in Political Science from Pune University.

Mr. Jesudasan was also a short tempered, volatile man capable of sudden bursts of extreme temper that would have him using his vocal chords with such ferocity and native filth that the entire apartment block feared him, everytime they crossed him walking up or down the apartment staircase. Mohan's anger would be known to the entire apartment block once he started his old Fiat Millicento, gifted to him by his brother , a Lt.Colonel in the army.

James was the only man who had a car in Mettiguda railway quarters, those days. The car often needed 8 people to push and start it. The car incidentally also had a music system and an innovation to carry bicycles and stuff.

Sarusamma was loved by the whole apartment, they even admired her when she smoked once a while. She was one of those few, in fact the only who wore blue faded jeans, thin cotton top, cut her hair short and could walk with any man who was her friend, with the least amount of consciousness.

Sundays were always special for the group , that was the day when a select group of Mohan’s friends met to discuss some play they were collaborating on or simply discuss matters of art, philosophy or literature. Once a while the discussion involved whisky and rum.

“What we have today that we call a country is what we in our literary terms would call a mixture of Dickensian England and Kafkan despotism. Then he stood up and gestured with his fingers back there pointing to his backyard, were we have the not so privileged living in conditions so appalling and embarrassing it is as ugly as the roguish New York of the 19th century. Our country is abound with the Jekylls and Hydes and Fagins and Olivers manipulated by hundreds of thousands of murderous, barbaric feudal megalomaniacs hiding behind masks of Gandhian khadi and pseudo socialism that they thrust on a near zombie land” – said Mr. Jesudasan as friends of his just smiled and nodded in consent. But Sarsuamma who was in the kitchen wasn’t taking it so easy, she came out, with her apron, knee length skirt, hands stuck with dough and wheat chaff, her hair dishevelled, a roti roller in one of her hand and bare foot.

She was charged when she stepped out of the kitchen and faced the hall where all the men were seated, with no hesitation, she threw her view to the group sitting in the hall “We are the people to be blamed for what this country has turned out to be , We’ve betrayed this country , all of you, and me, (she included) are as good as the dogs, bitches and pigs of Mettiguda. India and Indians have chosen to plunge into a space where indignity is but a fact of life - to openly defecate around Parliament and then war over who would get to eat the shit – and we sit around our homes and discuss Hume, Locke, Marx, Gandhi , Botha and Mandela when what is needed is you going to the streets, going to the village, the mandals, the rural hinterlands of India and building India’s democracy”.

Sarsu stopped, seeing one of her friends from Pune , Arvind, a young politician belonging to the CPI ( ML) who was also in the group standing up to put in his rejoinder to what She had said – Sarsu, listen its not easy as you think, the situation in the country is such that we can’t just walk out there and do what you say we’ve to do, the system out there has a huge vested interest not to allow such things, you will be termed anti national and killed in no time!” – he shrugged his shoulders, looked at her in all honesty and sat down.

Sarsu was not convinced, She said “Shame on you Arvind, coming from you its painful, We’ve allowed clans and dynasties to re-emerge, allowed our governance learn the art to stifle life, stifle voices and find joy in making sure the life at the bottom of the well was hell” and all we do is bring forward our fear of death ?

Just then the whole group were suddenly stopped short of their dialectic. They heard a urgent knock on their door and the door bell too rang with urgency.

XXI Existential Sunday, near death

Danny stepped out on his Sunday routine as usual, all of just about 3’, the apartment sounded like a a dozen steam locomotive engines furiously hissing to start all at once, such was the effect, that came from the 20 odd kitchens that invariably had a combination of steam rice cookers and milk cookers set up to cater to all the family members expectations for lunch on a busy Sunday morning, a few houses also had their radio blaring, through that din Danny's young mother called out saying they were expecting guests so he had to be back soon and he also had to make sure not to dirty his dress, she clearly also asked him to stay away from the ground and to play with friends closeby, but by the time Dan’s mother had finished her bit, Danny was already out, he started his day first at Vanaja’s home, he was made to feel special when they complimented him for his looks and style, Vanaja even caught hold him squeezed his cheeks and gave him a kiss but he couldn’t spend much time since he saw Vanaja was busy cooking, and so was Indra - Vanaja's younger sister who was then preparing for her SSLC - all the others at her place were also more or less occupied, so he ran out and went up the staircase to the corner where the girls were playing , he hugged and kissed a few of them even as they protested and cursed him, he hung around for a while watching them paint themselves using cheap lipsticks and crayons but he soon itched for the outdoors and so left the girls - without a courtesy bye - and reached the ground; The sight he saw was unbelievable, it was swarming, with action.

The heat, the activity, the sound, the frenzy, the action, the dust sent Danny’s heart pumping, the backdrop included a cacophony of bollywood music. Danny opened up his shirt, as he had seen many older boys doing before, exposed his white inner vest and rushed in screaming, a few adult boys slapped him behind Danny's his head as he ran, seemed like a ritual because Danny just didn’t mind, in fact he just tried pushing their hands away playfully and kept running until he came face to face with Bobby who was already around helping some elderly boys set up their cricket Stumps, soon the boys whom they were helping sent them packing as they were about to start their match.

Shortly, they were running all round, staying bit by bit at different game sections, a little bit where the big boys were Gambling, a bit where others were fighting it out with their pigeons, a while at the football corner, some time watching some boys playing on the Carom board, then they chased a few dogs, tried holding onto a kite that came falling down ( the poor kite tore into pieces almost as soon it reached the ground since too many boys were trying to hold it simultaneously) they, Danny and Bobby, just went round and round enjoying everything they saw, they even smelt the fruity smell of Godamba the country liquor and took in the rich smell of tobacco smoke wafting from that part of the ground, Danny and Bobby hoped one day they too would grow up and try the hard liquor and smoke that rich tobacco they saw the big boys smoking.

Invariably they soon landed near the big water well and went about chasing each other running around the well, it was then that Danny noticed, through a corner of his eye, that there were a few girls who had managed to reach the terrace of their apartment block and they were all watching the happenings at the ground with great interest. That’s when Danny decided it was time to show off a bit of dare devilry, so thinking he was up on the wall of the well and walking on it with his hand spread wide, now the wall of this well wasn't the most evenly structured through out its periphery, even the big boys often had to tread pretty carefully to avoid falling over, Danny’s bravado was noticed by some big boys playing close by and they warned him to get down and scoot, in reality Danny wasn't really the dare devil type, in fact he feared the dark, and was never the type to argue or pick a fight, not that he was a coward, its just  that he was not that 'overtly macho type' , at least not yet, he preferred running around, climbing on trees, jumping from small heights and stuff like that - what he was not good at is the more rougher stuff.

More often when the other small boys or even the girls, when they were angry with some of his pranks, caught him by the hair or identified him for a fight he would invariably be the one to get really hurt and if there were a referee watching a fight between Danny and an opponent giving him the thugs then it wouldn't have taken too much time for the referee to stop the fight and quickly declare Danny as clear the loser of the fight before getting mauled. The other reason could be the fact that Danny was a small in size, then, even in comparison to the boys and girls of his age and thin too.

But give Danny a chance to run, or climb or jump or do any such thing - he had no equals.

Which's probably the reason why he was also getting a bit used to being the ‘entertainer’ around, it was both a defensive action to hide some his more physical limitations while at the same time keep himself relevant among his friends. Danny enjoyed the attention that came along when he indulged on actions that bordered on the risky, while inside him his heart pounded , he continued pushing his luck just to get those admiring looks and compliments from people around.

Danny looked up once more and was happy to note that he had managed to get the attention of a few girls from the terrace , he kept his great trapeze act going, he would walk a bit , pause a bit, look up, ensure he had an audience and then walk again, during one of his pause he took a peep down into the well, at first he thought he would find a lion waiting inside as his mother had told him, but found none, it was a wide well, with a  wall made of bricks that were once red,  they were now covered with thick black and green moss, some parts of the well had grown thick shrubs of the banyan and the peepal like bonsais, the water beneath looked dark and dirty, Danny could see frogs, Dragon flies and some ghost like insects that made ripples as they moved, there was also a small flattened iron platform like structure a few feet above the water level of the well , the Railway water supply department had fixed a water pump, rusty and old, and they had a big 10” size pipe connected to it , a part of the pipe went down and disappeared into the well and another part leapt upwards and then went on its way to some part outside the ground.

Danny kept his eye both at his audience and once a while at the other boys playing cricket, the bollywood songs too were on, with one of Danny's favorite number from the movie DON playing, Bobby by now was a bit tired and so had crouched on the ground with his back to Danny watching the excitement in front of him, Danny had now reached that part of the Water well’s wall that had a big portion broken during the monsoons, so one had to squat down and get a good grip with both hands to cross it, as Danny made his moves a boy came rushing chasing a ball, the ball was about to go through the gap where Danny was located, the big boy gave out a bark , even as he was trying gather his breath, asking Danny to move out of the way, the small rubber ball with which the boys played cricket was now almost about to fall into the well, Danny thought he could help so he stretched his one hand to stop the ball and just then the boy chasing the ball came and collided onto Danny and that was it – Danny fell head long into the well , the rubber cricket ball hit the water first.

The water was cold and smelt funny, the frogs too surprised , they flew out of his path as he went down, big loads of that dark water were getting into his nostrils and to his horror Danny started drinking huge quantities of the water too.

Bobby turned around from where he was sitting, to face the well , men and boys were running towards it shouting things that was not clear to him, he realised something serious, very serious, had happened and soon he realised Danny was nowhere to be seen.

XX The Ground

Danny was soon back at his pad, the entire day passed through his mind like an ethereal cinema, it had drama, thrill, excitement, song and loneliness – ultimately that’s were we all returned to muttered Danny to himself - as he dived onto his bed and soon found himself next to Kurosawa assisting him in his Dreams.

It was a blazing Sunday morning at Mettiguda. Children of all colors  sizes, age had congregated at a small open space in the center of 4 independent apartment blocks, actually their backyard, that was commonly known as the ‘ground’ the space belonged to the Railways, but obviously, in fact the whole of Secunderabad City was split between either the railways or the Army whatever left were taken over by pig infested slums that were also home to the homeless like the rickshaw wallahs or the vegetable vendor or paani puri bhaiyas or even the gorkhas, they were known as the basthis - the slums - they also had a number of mean street dogs and bitches who fornicated openly, howled and barked endlessly in the night, most of them survived by mostly consuming the remains of people forced to defecate openly – in fact the pigs and the dogs and the bitches virtually fought over human shit, everyday around Mettiguda.

So that way a play ground was a luxury for sure.

The only difference between a basthi and an Official quarter was in the "Officialness" like water, electricity etc. the basthis or the slums had none of those but then they eventually started using the Official supplies meant for the Official Railway Quarters illicitly , everybody knew it as an open secret - while the people living in the official quarters paid for the facilities, the ones in the basthi did not.

Once a while great vocal tiffs would break out between the women on the official side and the women living closest to the basthi side on issues of pilferage, robbery or husband snatching.

The ‘Ground’ was actually an open area left unused more due to lack of imagination than as a planned play area, it had over a period of time become the most preferred play and leisure spot for all the boys of the railway quarters in and around, here you would find the rogues, the rowdies, the film style heroes, the smart alecks, the cheats , the sycophants and the general jobless [ they were very important, the jobless and the sycophants, the former were the ones who were made the 'Umpires' for a cricket match while the latter were required to run the errands ] playing or participating or watching ( with a cigarette or a beedi in hand) everything from street Cricket to Football, Volleyball, Marbles or flying kites , gambling with ‘packs’ or betting with pet pigeons or playing Gilli Danda. The younger ones played with old cycle tyres some well to do managed to play with their brand new bicycles.

And Danny? He was friends with all. There was something about Danny right from the days of his childhood that made him the endearing type with every kind of person – Danny could typically converse and laugh with a murderer, a rapist with as much ease as he would with a Philosopher, Writer, Physicist or Mathematician. This is not to say anything about Danny’s morality type, its just a note on Danny’s personality type. He was always the arty type, withdrawn yet a loafer , a calm bohemian painter, a gypsy musician in the midst of urban chaos. He was an outsider who remained inside simply by chance.

Whoever wanted to find whoever or whatever about those living around the railway quarters of Mettiguda or Lalaguda all they had to was to pay visit to the ground and they would certainly not go back disappointed- there you found the sons of Inspectors rubbing shoulders with the sons of foreman, driver, coalman, Khalasi or Gangman they were all there in a seemingly egalitarian portion of earth separated in class only by the cloths one wore or by the language one spoke.

The ground was also a multilingual, multicultural cauldron so you had the Tamil Brahmin boys, the Tamil Christian boys, the Anglo Indians, the Muslims, the North Indian Baniyas, the Marwadi the Andhraite, the kannadiga, the Malayalee everyone. So almost every language was spoken from Hindi, Telugu, a native form of English ( more like the anglo Indian type influenced a bit by the English used for communication by the Railway authorities) to all other Indian lingua pot pourri, just like the curry paste of South India, the spices came from far and wide just so that one salivating Indian tongue could taste a Chettinad Chicken, for instance.

Being the backyard it was also a museum displaying different dress codes by virtue of the large number of laundry that was put to dry, so one knew who wore what, some smart ones also noticed the colours and sizes of the undergarments put to dry and used such information to their advantage when it mattered – it wasn’t uncommon for young married brides to have roaring illicit affairs with the younger boys playing in the ground – for the women it was but one way to keep themselves entertained when their husbands went on tours that stretched for several days in a month. Some even eloped, often to return a bit dumber.

Very few girls ventured into the ground, those few who did congregated in a secluded corner more to exchange eye contact with their own Romeos, who would once in a while whisk the girls off to movies or take them on train or bus rides or hire a bicycle and take the girls to a fair or a festival event. Those girls who were less venturesome managed to sit near the grilled windows and make their presence felt – sparking romance with just quarter inch wide window grills.

The ‘Ground’ also had an illicit pan & cigarette shop, a water well, next to which sat Baliah who served illicitly brewed local country liquor, Godamba – by noon time on weekends it was common to find punch drunk teen adults on a slugfest invariably on reasons ranging from someone having teased a fellow alcoholic male’s sister or lover or mother or someone owed someone money or any of those things - a few drunk teens sometimes had better ideas , they would climb up the drain pipes and watch house wives doing whatever they did in their bathrooms, some found encouragement most had boiling water thrown on their faces. Those who found encouragement would get down to find a spot and masturbate, the ones who had boiling water thrown on them rushed and jumped into the nearby well screaming their guts and cursing the bitch who did it. It wasn't uncommon to find the world’s most loony barbarians hanging around the deep corners of the ‘ground’ which also meant the police were almost always coming and going about the ‘ground’.

Mothers and parents belonging to more educated class of railway employees always dreaded their children playing at the ground but for the boys who did it it was but one place where they could sweat and play ball and gossip and learn to smoke or for those more adventurous to smuggle whores or girl friends in the night. For the Homosexuals it was heaven on earth at night. And yes even the sodomists, the deranged and the dysfunctional who it was rumoured used animals, used the ground when it was dark, real dark, albeit more discreet than others.

One odd day one would have news about a dead body found, often in an abandoned well that supplied water to surrounding railway workshops or parts of a body found thrown casually or some such thing. Those days policed dogs would be put into service early in the morning a small crowd would hang around then evidence will be removed and soon the ground gets filled with children playing. So in short ‘the ground’ had something for all – from a sports enthusiast to a murderer, a alcoholic, a gambler or a Policeman, or a whore or desperate lovers.

The scene in the evening or more so on a Sunday would have looked like ‘all hell had broken loose’ for an outsider not just because of the shouts and shrieks and the choicest cuss words being thrown in abundance but more so for the sheer chaos they would have seen, during play time at least a few hundred children would assemble together on that ‘ground’ - a small space just enough to say park about 15-20 cars [ of course for the children of the railway quarters a car was way ahead of their imagination] -   here the 100-200 children who had gathered would all belong to their teams and localities, sometimes they would ‘matches’ between two different Apartment blocks  but that way it would be normal to find about 20 different matches going at any given point of time and one had to be a genius to differentiate between a fielder of one team from another. A fielder chasing a ball hit by a batsman from his match will often find himself chasing at least 20 other balls on field hit by other batsman from other matches and the fielding often had to cut across the football and volley ball courts that also had their own ilk playing the games – once a ball was hit you simply chased, everyone else would simply adjust around – guess it’s probably from these chaotic playgrounds that most Indians learnt their weird traffic sense.

It was one of those Sundays, the ground was filled to the brim with children playing all sorts of games, the aromas of different cuisines being concocted by mothers of various caste, creed and cultural affinity mixed freely in the open air, the pigs, the dogs and the occasional donkey were busy too. Daniel was too small to fit anywhere, he and a few of his size simply ran around playing odd games, mostly catch me if you can or hide and seek, they often got beaten up by the grown ups when they inadvertently bumped into a fielder chasing a ball or trying to catch a ball or throwing for a run out.  Daniel’s mother hated it whenever she knew it that he was playing at the ground.

So often on Sundays Daniel would often start with the girls first. He knew that the little girls avoided the ground so he would start the day playing with them in their games of cooking or dressing up or walking the ramp or playing ‘teacher, teacher’ or hide and seek when he could cuddle up with some of them which kind of excited them. It was such a Sunday, Danny’s mother had given him a bath, powdered him nicely, he smelt good, combed his hair into a trademark Elvis Presley puff in the front.
Daniel had the nose of an Aryan, the eyes of a South Asian, skin of a Dravidian and the physic of a unique metabolic mixture that placed him somewhere in between a tall Mexican and a Short Kenyan, would have suited to be a part of the British Mail Service or Kipling’s team of explorers if he had been born earlier.

He had a starched and ironed cotton shirt with a neat short slack and a hawaii.

Even if Dan’s parents were of very modest means they never made him feel it, at least during his early childhood when his own needs where also minimal, Dan’s father was a graduate officer in the railways, his Mom tended to the household needs along with his Sister Stella. Dan’s mother was expecting a third family member soon. Dan’s mother came from a modest background, She had 15 siblings, they originally hailed from Madurai a place in the state of Tamilnadu. Danny had heard about rumors of how rich his grandfather on the mothers side used to be but some unfortunate circumstance, brought in by his Grandfather’s step mother, who fearing division of property one day threw out Danny’s Grandfather's entire family from their ancestral family estate that had Rice and Oil Mills, they used to own private buses and also a number of retail shops selling groceries and automobile spares. But once they stepped out of the family estate the siblings experienced poverty and penury. Danny's grandfather had to rebuild life from scratch Thanks to help from some friends from the trading community, who were Muslims, but what the hell? .

Danny’s Father too had a similar background, they belonged to Palghat, a town in the state of kerala.

They too belonged to an erstwhile rich ancestry with huge tracts of agricultural land to take care of an equally large family of 16, but the family lost most what they had owing to different reasons including the onset of land reforms by one of the world’s first ever democratically elected Communist party government that kerala shared with the Republic of San Marino ( San Marino’s Government in fact preceded that of Kerala’s by almost a decade ) in the last part of the 50’s ( ’57). Justice Krishna Iyer, a Brahmin socialist, changed the destiny of many a rich agrarian Kerala gentry , known as Jenmins a.k.a. the feudals, life overnight. But, Danny’s grand parents did not lose their wealth purely due to the reforms they had several other complex reasons. The only thing Dan cared to remember was that his grandfather was an Art Teacher, at a local Government School [ which he reached by walking over 20kms  on one side] a quack of Ayurveda and Homeopathy and also a closet Alchemist.

Danny’s great grand father had joined the railways as a Station Master somewhere in the late 19th century , he then joined the Basel Mission - of course as a heathen who needed purging.

IXX Shame, Shame, I love you !

Children at the Santiniketan School were animated no end, someone had whispered into their ears that Daniel had given Annie a letter with the words ‘I love you’ scribbled on it and one of the girls who discussed the issue decided not to allow Daniel go Scot free for his dirty action and so went on a whispering mission asking the entire classroom to come together and at a signal shout the words “Shame, Shame I love you! Shame, Shame, I love you”! together until Daniel apologised and soon the planned chorus started the entire class 1 A started shouting 'Shame, Shame I love You! Shame, Shame I Love You'! The chorus had its ups and down with with some venturing to go near Daniel and shout the words out but Daniel simply looked at what was going on and soon he too joined the chorus least realising it was actually against him.

Poor little Annie was the only one who was left confounded as to how to react and then she did the only thing she knew best - She started crying muttering to herself ‘I hate Danny, I hate Danny’ and threw the piece of paper he had given her.

Daniel jesudasan? Danny heard his name being called out, he looked around to see where or how on earth did Mrs. Sorelily, his class teacher, managed to land at Boston ? Daniel jesudasan? This time the sound was closer, Daniel opened his eyes and realised it was the paging system at the St. Auburn hospital calling out his name, he soon realised he was not in Santiniketan and rushed to the information desk and introduced himself saying he was Daniel, soon he also saw Rachel, Annie's friend walking towards him with a tired smile on her face, She informed Daniel “you may now go see her”, as she removed a glove from her hand and then picked up a visitor tag and gave it to him while also informing him that Annie was shifted to room number 0209 and that she was still a bit drowsy bur she would in all probability be discharged in a few hours say by dinner time and that she would need at least a weeks complete rest with a full time nurse to attend on her until recovery.

Danny, nodded his head to mean Ok and Thanked Rachel and then moved towards room # 0209 going by the directions on the corridor wall, soon he found it, knocked on the door and found a nurse coming out, he smiled at her and asked if he could go in she said Yes and so He stepped in.

To his surprise Annie was already awake, looked a bit weak, looking as an author would have put it  'reductive' but otherwise smiling and somehow amused the moment she saw him, he returned her smile as he saw gesturing with her hands asking him to come and sit beside her on the bed. Danny enquired if she wanted anything, maybe water ? Annie smiled again and said ‘don’t be a moron Dan I’m not supposed to have anything for a another few hours at least’ Danny gave her a mock feeling of pain and then asked her what was all the action about? knowing even while asking what it was but feigning ignorance, Annie wasn’t someone to be fooled by all that so instead of replying started talking in a low but firm tone ‘listen, take a cab head straight to my pad, here are the keys, you’ll find a travel bag somewhere in the mess, pack some decent stuff that I can wear for a formal occasion, don’t forget to also pack my undergarments and yes pick up the tickets and finally bring my mobile phone, the charger and my laptop’ and then she kicked Dan on the butt playfully and without making a sound said ‘Go’ – Dan was about to protest, he was about to tell her what Rachel had told him about rest etc. but later knew it wasn’t worth wasting his energy on those things ‘coz he also knew Annie would simply not listen and as expected Annie was in no mood to allow Dan even those few minutes to think or react, she just pushed him Dan shook his head, swore under his breath and soon was out cussing.

It was around 11.0 in the night Danny was driving back home in his Chevy, he had just dropped Annie at a place near Storrow Drive where She was picked up by a hugely relieved Prof. Bernstein and then they were off to the Airport on their way to Oxford, London.

Danny was left with all hospital papers and bills thrown on his back seat, Annie had told him ‘ just keep them, may need them maybe for a week’ and then waved him a kiss with her lips curled simultaneously indicating that she would call once she lands at London before getting into the Professor's cab.

Eastern Boston had by then drawn the shutters and getting set for a good warm night, the man on the radio too had sobered down his pitch as he played a Bob Dylan number, Danny realised he needed to sleep.

XVIII Broken

As planned Danny called up Anne in 2 days to check if she was ready, Annie picked her phone and was immediately sobbing, Dan realised she was drunk and probably was on alcohol ever since she left him at the rehab, Dan remembered Annie saying that the rehab was such a nice place and she would one day want to spend some time there because she thought the rehab made her feel "less like a whore" and laughed now on the mobile phone she was saying ‘I’m such a bitch, a whore, a slut good enough for just fucks, I’m’ ‘I shouldn’t have come to Harvard, should have instead taken up prostitution’ and silently wailed, Dan was left without a chance to react, even if he had heard Annie say such things before, especially when she was down and low, but every time he heard her spraying out those words he knew he had to act and quick, so he enquired as to who was with her and where she was, Annie said she was in her apartment and that she had already asked Richard to fuck off, which he had promptly done. Dan then told her to put the phone down and that he was coming over.

Dan rang the bell, and what seemed like an eternity Annie opened the door, she was topless, all she had was something that looked like a bed linen cloth hurriedly tied sideways on her hip not surprisingly she looked every inch ravaged, wrecked and abandoned in the mind, besides being drunk and, Dan suspected, drugged with some kind of an overdose of pills too. Dan guessed all of that  on the basis two premises one Annie looked too cracked which no matter how drunk one is the person still gets to talk  or look or sway or do some such thing its when one gets drugged is when you droop and generally look hollowed out the second premise of course was past experience. Dan, stepped in, the apartment was a single bedroom studio apartment close to Cambridge. It was a simple but tastefully done up place - a good love hole Annie called it - located on the 12th floor overlooking the campus at a walkable distance.

Today, the house was dark, all curtains were drawn and it managed to give out a very broken feel. Like a glass bottle dropped and left unwiped.

Annie did not bother waiting she just floated back to her bed and threw herself onto it, crying. Dan, noticed the apartment was in shambles, sheets of old news papers , damaged carton boxes, beer and vodka bottles, used condoms, cigarette butts and empty packs and all sorts of half open draws and cabinets some even thrown out of their shelves lying in different stages of rash use, by the looks of it Dan guessed it had happened a few days back and also guessed it wasn’t anything pleasant. Dan kicked off some of the debris then found himself a deck chair that had old copies of the Times Literary Supplement placed on it , he shifted the trash out and eased himself down on the chair all the time watching Annie who had her back turned up and was sleeping with her head below.

The room reeked of alcohol and smoke and just beside the chair where he was seated on a table that had a reading lamp lay a British airways ticket to London, Dan stretched and took the ticket in his hand and read it for details and realised it was for the same day on her name and then noticed that the flight was just past midnight. So he still had time to see if she could make it but then he also thought about the other problem that Annie had proposed, which was the real purpose of his visit - to go for a D&C and clear her womb.

As Dan kept reflecting on the course of action, Annie turned around wiped her tears and sat up on the bed and then lit a smoke, Dan, got up and opened a few windows to let the stifling, heavy air out. And then came back and showed Annie the air ticket, she just said ‘fuck it’ and tried snatching it from Danny’s hands , Dan easily withdrew his stretched out hand and just then noticed that she had bruises all over her hands and eyes, even some cigarette burns on her arm, as he tried evaluating the seriousness of the bruises Annie’s iphone gave out an alert, it was a message, Dan took the mobile and among several messages from Richard also saw a new message from Prof. Bernstein, which was on top, he opened the message and read it out aloud, Prof. Bernstein was asking Annie as to when he could pick her up on their way to the airport. Dan suspected that the Prof. knew the situation here. Dan knew that Bernstein was Annie’s agony saint besides being her research guide and mentor at Harvard.

Dan, replaced the mobile. And once again shifted his gaze towards Annie, and her bruises and wondered how men could stoop down to such levels of violence , especially men of such high calibre of such intellect and such extra ordinary rational maturity like Prof. Richard, he was about to speak but then stopped short as he watched Annie make all the clichéd actions of a forlorn and abused lover, she looked blank, allowed the cigarette ash to grow in size, she had had her leg sprawled and her head cocked on one angle and eyes looking somewhere between the ceiling and nowhere – with her open breast hanging low, she looked every inch ready for an European artist to walk in , sit down and paint her on to a canvas, Dan looked again into Annie’s face and gave a wry smile as he imagined the brush strokes and the pastel shades of the painting just then Annie suddenly stood up took his hand and rushed to the washroom and headed straight into the commode throwing up exactly when she reached the commode with such violence that Dan was a little taken aback at first Danny swore and then helped her get most of what was coming out, the stench wasn’t the most pleasant of things which Annie realised soon and then pushed Dan away asking him to go out but Dan stayed on anyways.

Soon, Annie was washing up and asked Dan to move out since she wanted to pee Dan refused to move so Annie simply squatted on the commode and eased herself even as Dan watched, Dan just stood there waiting, once She was done Annie got up took a tissue paper and cleaned herself up and then looked at the tissue, it had traces of some blood marks which even Dan noticed but without looking at Dan She just threw it and moved over to the cabinet, took her brush and paste and started brushing. Dan moved out, leaving her inside the bathroom and quickly tried putting back the strewn out draws and cabinets back to their places and also tried his best to clean up the mess, Annie watched him through the mirror, quickly washed up , came out of the bath and for the first time spoke asking if Dan would care for some Coffee, Dan nodded and Annie moved into her kitchen, Dan heard her swear, from where he stood Dan noticed that the kitchen sink was full. He then raised his voice and suggested they walk towards the nearby starbucks.

Annie, waited a while looking at the mess and then quietly searched around for something to wear, found a denim short and a hooded jersey of the Boston Globes, slipped into them, Annie was a free lance feature writer and critic with the newspaper, Danny was by then near the door waiting as Annie neared the door, as She came close to him She just pulled Danny in and hugged him tight and started crying again, her whole body shook, it felt like a few thousand volts of stored up energy released, Danny gave her a squeeze and then patted her head softly and held her for a while, he sensed she was running a little temperature.

They both stepped out, Dan took some tissues and gave it to Annie, she used it to clean her nose, soon they were at the coffee shop, a soft Boston summer sun had a broad golden shaft of its warm light thrown in through the glass pane facing the street, Annie and Dan took a seat right in the midst of the sunlight and ordered – Coffee and breakfast, it was almost lunchtime actually.

Annie and Dan sat and watched the scenes outside, they were on Brattle Street, on the west end side of Boston, one of those American geographic points whose glorious past took you right back to the American Revolution and the Boston Tea party, Annie and Dan had often time to visit some of the landmarks around , Annie seemed to really the enjoy when they visited the place belonging to the American poet H.W. Longfellow , she had recited a first part of his poem ' A Gleem of Sunshine'

This is the place. Stand still, my steed,
Let me review the scene,
And summon from the shadowy Past
The forms that once have been.

aloud then, to the amusement of people around, from his seating position Dan could see portions of the calm bluish silvery mane of the humble Charles River in the distance, as he sat contemplating how to start his conversation with Annie, the delicacy of it, to start something without triggering her back into the dark state of mind she was in;

But the more he thought the more his mind was conjuring up images of the Boston harbour and the drive Annie and his friends had had to Montreal a few months back.

The food and coffee arrived, served by a pleasant University intern, Annie managed a smile. Dan was about to ask Annie about her plans but Annie had already decided, she just stood up asked the barman for the check, simply threw some bills from her purse took hold of Dan and started heading out Dan as usual wasn’t prepared but he was starving too so he just grabbed whatever he could from the table even as some of it spilled out , the intern who served them came running asking if she could help wrap some stuff into a take away cover but by then Annie was were already out, Dan rushed after her asking through his stuffed mouth 'What the fuck'? Annie ignored him and simply gestured a cab pulled him in and directed the Cab to move towards the Mt. Auburn Hospital, Dan cursed and sat inside lost for words, still munching whatever he had grabbed from the coffee shop, by now Annie was on the mobile, talking to a friend someone she knew at the hospital she was saying “listen Rachel, I need this help, don’t know what you do, I’m reaching in about 10 minutes just tell me whom to talk to…” by the time Dan knew what was going on the cab had reached the hospital, Annie asked Dan pay the cab an She was off.

Dan had to jog to catch up as they entered Danny noticed someone waving at Annie and guessed her to be Rachel , the lady that Annie had spoken to just a while back, she looked familiar, in all probability another of those interns – they were all over Boston – apparently all that she had to be told was already passed on even before reaching , so She quietly directed Annie towards the patient registration desk while dialling a Dr. Allen while she was making arrangements the lady at the desk asked Annie if she had someone to sign as a witness She said yes and then turned towards Dan and said “my husband to be” smiled at the lady and then took the pad from her and showed Dan the spot where he had to sign, Dan looked at her, with a raised brow , she just kept jerking her face and neck askew vigorously indicating ‘just do it, just do it’ Dan realised he had no choice so he simply picked the pen and put his signature.

As Dan was handing over the pad he saw Rachel waiting, She explained to the front desk lady that they were her friends and that she would be responsible to ensure everything was taken care of and requested the front desk lady to send across the papers to Dr. Allen’s chamber, the lady smiled and nodded her concurrence and said not to worry and so they moved off. Shortly after, Dan was made to wait outside Dr. Allen’s chamber, Annie had managed to pick up a book from the Dr’s desk – a copy of Readers Digest ( even the wrapper that promised huge freebies for subscription renewal was intact)  – and sent it across through Rachel to Dan , as Dan kept looking at the mag Rachel started talking to Dan saying that there was nothing to worry and that the procedure would hardly take a few hours and that She’ll be back once the procedure was done and then vanished leaving Danny with the Readers Digest and a feeling that bordered on the helplessly helpless, he just dropped down on a cold metal chair in the waiting hall, watched a bit of Wimbledon that was being shown on the television, soon dozed off.

But somewhere inside his head the questions raged on, how can women render themselves to such treatment? What makes them choose such abuse? Leave alone the physical bruises, what about the scars of the mind? How? Why ? Especially women of Annie’s caliber ? they could pick a man from the campus at will, and they could talk down a so called patriarch of the campus and hold them by the scruff of their necks ! But, then still end up broken, but why? they were successful, well to do, young, great on looks, terrific body, respected, had a huge future beckoning leaving no reasons to be dependent or feeling insecure – then why ?  the answers that came back were simply not convincing especially since Dan subconsciously also thought from the other side; Prof. Richardson how could he? what is it that brought the beast in him? He, a teacher , a mentor a thinker? Where in a human mind were these bestiality hidden? how do they creep to the surface ? from a deep, unpredictable primordial land? making one a foreigner to ones own notions of civility ? how much more of human evolution will it need for men to stop from abusing women?

Dan, half opened his eyes and noticed the Boston Sun setting spreading a binge of magenta and purple hues all around, the glass panes of the Mt. Auburn hospital transformed themselves into a display classic art displaying the dark haloed nimbus clouds, the shades and gradations formed by the skyline looked unreally beautiful, poor river Charles had turned dark and the boats on it had become distant lonely ghosts moored with a necklace of weak and loosely arranged electric lights, their make up for the night.

Dan for a while felt he was up there in the sky on a flying chair, sleeping and yet witnessing something celestial, very unreal.

XVII Smoke rings

Danny dozed off on the deck chair . A warm sun light was on him baking him orange. He was reading Pamuk that lay spread legged on his chest. Annie walked in taking efforts not to make a sound when she found Danny dozing, She knew Danny slept light and could wake up at the slightest sound, so she moved away and let him continue and walked towards another chair close by and decided to wait until Dan woke up.

Meanwhile Annie thought she could catch up with her presentation on ‘Contemporary Philosophy and Neo Phenomenology’ which she had to get ready for Bernstein in the next 2 days. Prof. Bernstein and Annie were to travel to Oxford soon for a seminar. So she opened her mac and went about her work. People who might have watched Annie then would have probably seen a sleek, petit looking brown girl not more than 26, pretty to look at around 5’5” probably in her sophomore years, but in actuality Annie was going on 30 and moving into a potential motherhood. The other deceptive part of anyone looking at Annie would be a reading of her personality for all who cared to look at her would have thought her to be good, light hearted, out for fun , friendly kind of a person, while she could be all that, she could also be a fireball, oh! Yes! She could shred anyone into pieces if she wanted to.

Danny woke up soon, would have maybe slept for an hour or so, the baking sun had made sure he woke with a moderate sweat, as he tried shading his eyes from the sun he noticed Annie and smiled at her and said Hi ! Annie looked up from her work and returned the greetings Hey! I almost thought you will be out for another few hours at least and trailed off to look back at her mac. Dan stood up without noticing the book on his chest and dropped it but did not bother to pick it up and instead stretched a bit, just then Annie asked ‘ Dan, can you smoke here? Dan made a negative sign and then gestured to her drawing her attention to a board that gave direction to the smokers park , a simple open arena under old oak wood trees and manicured plants and several wooden park benches pretty idealistic for a de-addiction rehab. Annie, got the message and quickly shut her mac and asked without actually asking if she could leave the mac on the chair Dan nodded and then they started walking with a familiarity that can only come between two old friends, they were easy, playful, light and pretty happy in each others company.

As they passed through the neat corridor of the rehab Danny noticed there was absolutely no soul to be seen and that always seemed so every time he landed, at the rehab, he almost felt the rehab was some kinda of an unofficial home left to him through some dubious uncle and he was the only occupant. Of Course such fallacies were short lived once the rehab managers called for a group therapy session and suddenly you found face to face with quite of a few co inhabitants, many looking as if they had just returned from some near death experience.

Danny also noticed how much American buildings used wood, wood on the panel, wood on the roof, wood on the floor, wooden furniture, doors, windows it was wood everywhere Dan thought America probably used more wood than they used steel. As they walked Dan and Annie made long shadows that seemed to be chasing them trying to catch up but always falling short.

Annie broke in through his thoughts she said in a plain matter of fact tone without looking at him for any effect ‘ I’ve broken up with Richard, we’ve decided to go our separate ways’, Dan did not say anything, just kept walking, Richard and Annie were living in partners, they were together for now about 6 months and were intending to marry soon, Dan knew she had also tested positive a few days ago. Richard was Assistant Professor at the Department of Quantum Physics at Harvard. They had met during one of her seminars on "the nature of symmetry in nature and how the laws of physics worked in shaping things on the planet" it was a research paper not directly related to Annie's subject of specialisation but yet Annie had approached the seminar lead Richard and he had consented to allow her a presentation once she showed him what she had.

At the end of the seminar Annie had won quite a few admirers for her insight and as it turned out Annie and Richard hit it off quite well, Annie revered Physicists she always thought they knew more about the Universe than any other living humans, and soon the two started living together Richard was from New York but since the relationship started had moved into Annie's pad but now Danny felt that that chapter in Annie's life was over or at least so it seemed for now.

By then they had reached the Smoker park area inside the rehab and Dan sat on a bench, Annie decided to stand, she flicked open her cigarette pack, lit one with her zipper light pushed the lighter back onto her jeans inhaled deep and exhaled, while trying to kick some dry leaves around she asked Dan ‘So when are you out?’ Dan said that he just had 1 more day to go but then he also had a 10 day community service to complete. Annie, did not seem too keen to know any further details, she said ‘ I need your help I want to take away the seed inside before its too late’ again this was said with natural ease without much feelings or remorse, Dan nodded and said they could plan it the day after his release.

Annie stayed back and watched a movie with Dan, a Woody Allen film, somewhere in between She received a call and then she was off, giving Dan a quick, light hug indicating he needn't get up slipped a word reminding him to call her once he was out.

At the rehab the bell rang - it was group therapy time. Dan was in no mood to join. Somewhere Danny heard someone singing 'hey Jude'.

XIV The Good life

He was back at the rehab. In a way he was glad, rehabs are great places to go to once a while. You’re back to being treated like you were at School. Bobby gave the slip, smart that he was, he knew it the moment he saw the blue lights hitting out at us from a distance must be probably heading towards the Mojave, that’s what he said he was planning. He had also said he might try testing death sometime soon at Sierra Leone where his marines where to infiltrate two rebel factions and trigger a fresh bout of civil war, someone did not want peace in Sierra Leone.

“Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies” Nietzsche had once said, Dan often wondered how they managed this, these Nietzsches, Sartres, Descartes and et al squeezing something profound everytime they rent the air with their voice, his other favourite quote was by a contemporary Physicist Frederik Kerling “ Perhaps we even need to look behind consciousness itself, to find what is the foundation of reality” this one blew Dan out because this study of Annie’s life along with Dans' and others is exactly that, a sustained , relentless,  attempt to scourge beyond the consciousness, not just the here and the now but something deeper beyond even conscious past for those dark bits and pieces like the carbon in your chillum hidden somewhere, someplace that make us what we make of the world around us.

How we act, react , reply, respond – how we perceive ourselves and others when we’re drowned to the gills taking hallucinatory drugs or when we're punch drunk - yes, that's when you need to know, that's when you want to catch yourself doing things and seeking answers.

Those were the questions, the whispers inside Dan, they kept asking ‘ is there ? Something there beyond consciousness? No it was not about god or divinity those had become too prosaic, too lame even archaic, his queries were more to do with his own self, his own dislocation. Are there things inside you that you don’t know? But yet things that surface? even without your volition? and make you do things? Questions that floated somewhere between his legs and his head even as he sat comfortably lounged on a deck chair watching and soaking in a clutch of noire stuff more as a distraction from his collective basket of insomnia , de addiction and guilt laden introspection;

He had started with Majid Majidi and Abbas Kiarostami, moved on to Godard and Fellini, Dan finally lost appetite by the time he reached Kieslowski – that’s the beauty of a rehab, good life, good cinema, great food, good ambience - lots of pine and a little bird who walked all over him too.

Given a chance Dan would want to report into a rehab every weekend, having lost faith since years, his unspiritual emptiness found resonance in the desodomised halls of a rehab.

XIII - Unbound

Dan took a drag from Bobby, Dan noticed Bobby was by now completely lost to a different world, maybe he was in Bosnia.  A faint smile crossed his lips as he saw himself as a kid walking in that blistering sun. He was just 6 or 7 maybe, Annie must have been a bit younger. He was dark brown with thick black porcupine hair, a round face, dark eyes but somehow had this look of mischief written all about him, then. Annie too was brown maybe a bit fairer than Dan, she too was small, dark hair split into two pony tails. The only difference is Annie looked more scholarly, intelligence was written all over her, Annie had an aura, a certain sense of energy that was impossible to miss.  She had a laugh that was infectious. And boy did she laugh with her eyes – once again Dan smiled the smoky visions he was looking at were so pleasant, he was glad and so he took another deep drag and exhaled.

Dan could hear the FM radio playing a song he knew ‘when she goes she’s gone, when she stays, she stays right here’ …he sang along in an undertone almost all to himself and his mind continued to take him back to that day.

They certainly did not look the least like any runaways as they walked, hand in hand with a lot of encouraging words of comfort from Vanaja, their serendipitous escort, by now both Annie and Dan had exhausted all their tears they were now left with just a few hiccups and an occasional sob, even as they sucked on the lollipop they were given at a bakery just after alighting from the bus by a very light and smiling Vanaja – who gave it to them saying ‘OK, runaways here’s your prize catch, enjoy’ and how we did ! And as we sauntered on in the distance we could see a kind of a crowd rushing forward, we could sense Vanaja tensing up first and then she muttered oh! There they are, your parents. Almost glad she had completed her part of the story.

Dan, thought that this complete sense of disengagement, his preference for alienation and his penchant for the melodramatic that he suffered from often may have probably had its roots somewhere in those years. But the problem with him was he was too much of an actor too, he could and would almost always end up trying to be an image, a replica of someone or something he would have found interesting, he was rarely himself – except when he was lost and alone. And that made his task of sifting through layers of himself very complicated, it was tough separating the real from the actor, the fake.

And the other comfort he had found in his later years of being a clown, a slapstick comedian who wanted to see others laugh through ridiculous means flummoxed him. To him so much of it was a negation of his inner self but he never knew why people always thought he was an comic artist, people always thought he could make them smile and he ended up obliging – and the joke was always on him.

Maybe someone wanted him to be an idiot, maybe his mother or maybe his father, maybe his teachers too, maybe his friends – someone somewhere wanted him to be an idiot.

His early childhood seemed too , too hazy, somewhere in that hazy dark alley of his mind he could hear several sounds, several hymns and cries, somewhere he found his mother screaming, with pain, somewhere he found his father doing something ugly and physical to his mother. Somewhere he found his mother stealing glances and smiling at another man – how authentic can these ghost like images be? Did he really witness such events? Did they have a bearing on what he became as an adult? Are you as an adult simply a sum of your hoary past ? a past that had no real language? No real metaphor? A product with no known source of supply ? mentally ?

Physically, the DNA, the proportions and all that were pretty clear but where did he become what he has become? Why? When? How? Danny trail of thinking continued now onto a different track 'How predictable was my past ? the questioned boomed inside his head . For Dan these questions had become critical and he knew that his mind needed some real deconstruction, deconstruction? Or was it? Whatever. Dan muttered.

Peel away they used say - at the Confucian monastery he stayed, somewhere deep in Mongolia? Or was it when he was in China? - just peel away – you’ll find the Hereros, those native Americans, the aborigines all those living, roaming inside you. Inside you you will find the oppressed and the oppressive, you will find you the idiot.

Dan took a another drag, the marijuana seemed slow in acting but the combination of the scotch and the grass gave him a sense of being ethereal, he turned to Bobby and said Hey! Come back from Bosnia Bobby! And he started laughing, Bobby looked at him and smiled and sang the song that Dan had hummed a while ago ‘ when she goes she’s gone..’ and then said to him ‘you seem lost yourself Dan, where were you Prague? Berlin?  The questions had a weight of their own. They, the questions, referred to their visit to the Jewish cemetery where they had smoked a weed dedicated to Yehuda Ben Bezalel and later at Berlin to the play on Nietzsche that they had been to.

They were punch drunk and had stood up and questioned the playwright and all that that was being enacted before being finally thrown out of the theater for being such a huge nuisance it was a miracle that they weren't deported. And it was even more fortunate they weren't in the Nazi era.

In fact it was in Germany that he had first conjured up his musical on Shelley’s Prometheus and it was in Prague he thought he would corrupt his musical and give it a Byronesque twist. An effect not unaffected by the little Czech red heads who had taken him to the Sex machines muzeum one night and then all hell had broken loose – Bobby and Dan were caught in a real crazy chase, someone did not like Bobby using a machine on a pet dog , we had to run for our lives, the pet belonged to a Mohawk head – Bobby had to use his real gun to escape.

Dan and Bobby were by now swinging , they were back near the Chevy and they were singing and dancing to a Jim Morrison number LA Woman and by now they were managing to attract attention from people around – but they were on a highway and they were oblivious. Danny, was slowly but surely blacking out.

And the wind was turning cold.

XII - The first elopement

Vanaja was a young, newly recruited clerk working for the railways. A south Indian Brahmin she had to complete a hoard of chores in the morning which started exactly at 4.30Am everyday . Her day started with her helping out her mother, sweeping and mopping the house ( it had to happen just today, when she found the recycled nightie cloth which she used for mopping was beyond use and so She had to sacrifice one more old underskirt of hers, she tore it carefully and used a torn piece to mop the floor while carefully preserving the rest for future use) , washing her family’s laundry, cutting out vegetables, making breakfast for all her 10 family members and even helping Mother preparing lunch before finally packing her own lunch box.

But today everything had gone horribly wrong , one she woke up late, real late, 7AM, then she found her ailing asthmatic brother needed help, and then she realised her mother too was sick and so could not get herself up from her bed which invariably meant she had to make sure every aspect of the household work fell squarely on her shoulders for the day and she would only be able to start to her office post lunch.

Vanaja finally turned the kerosene stove down and cut the flame fully. Wiped her brow with her saree end and carefully picked up the boiling Sambar vessel from the stove using the same saree end in a manner she could hold two ends of the round neck of the vessel and then with a turn of her torso placed the vessel in a circle of other lunch related stuff that she had already arranged on the floor of their small kitchen. Then through the corner of her eye she looked at the old wall clock and cursed, realising it had stopped working and so she was fooled into believing that she still had enough time to start to her office at least after eating something called lunch but the moment she realised that the wall clock wasn't working she froze and knew she better starve if she were to reach office post lunch and save at least half a days CL. She quickly recovered her energy and rushed towards the small pooja shelf where she had her wrist watch which was gifted to her by her dad as a recognition of his love for her when she handed him her first salary of Rs.30.

At first she thought her wrist watch too wasn't working because it was showing a time that she refused to believe, she held the watch and took near her ears and shook it twice and looked at the watch again and this time she could clearly see the minute needle moving and she realised She was really, really late to her office even for the post lunch session. Just yesterday her superior Mr. Viswamithra had warned her about her late reporting and said that one more day and he would be forced mark her as LOP for a day as per rules. But, then she thought she could still make it in case she moved right away.

Vanaja, lost no time, she rushed into the washroom, opened the tap thanked her luck that the municipal tap water had still not been stopped, they used to stop it at sharp 8am and it was already 12.45 and the water was still flowing, She quickly threw her old Saree, her blouse into a corner and without bothering to remove either her bra or her full length underskirt simply picked the aluminium mug, picked water from the aluminium bucket and started her bath at jet speed. In seconds she was out, running, in her wet underskirts, the towel wrapped around her hair and another old torn rag to cover her naked breast.

She rushed mumbling a sloka, lit the holy wicker lamp ( in the process almost threw all the matchsticks from her matchbox down) took a small bit of Vibhoothi with one of her fingers she made a sliding motion so that the ash mark appeared as a neat thick horizontal line on her forehead making sure the mark appeared exactly at the center of her forehead. She then picked her box kajal and with an expert swish applied it to both her eyes with just an obtuse angle view of her small tin framed mirror. She then wriggled and unwrapped her towel wrapped around her hair rushed to put the towel to dry on the plastic electrical wire piece that was cut at two ends and tied to two strong nails located at 2 ends of their single bedroom apartment to function as their family linen and laundry drying line , the house incidentally was given to her father by the railways as a Sr. Foreman at the local railway locomotive shed.

Vanaja was now moving at the speed of light, She grabbed the first Saree she could lay her hands on, while simultaneously bringing her hair forward with an expert shake of her head and a angular bending of her torso her entire hair bunch just flew to the front she quickly held it gave it a formal brushing with a comb even if it was hard and knotty and then quickly threw her hair back while tying her hair into a single knot at the end of her hair length- in flat 10 minutes she was all set to reach her bus stop – Mettiguda, which was also the stop for all those who were connected in some way to the Lalaguda Railway hospital close by.

The bus was packed to its gills, people were crammed so close it was hard to breathe, the mid afternoon summer heat only made matters worse, Vanaja made sure there were no males anywhere near her trying to inadvertently rub onto her in the guise of the shaking and bustling of the bus, the weight of the overcrowded bus was such that the bus had bent itself onto the left side almost as if the people who were hanging out on the footboard were trying to pull it down like those anarchist at the University campus and it was miraculously fighting to remain steady and continue to worm its way towards its destination, as the vehicle laboured its way forward, Vanaja could hear the Driver giving a piece of his mind to some of the rogues on the footboard clearly instructing them to stay away from the women. She then looked around and found a few familiar faces and acknowledged them with a smile while continuously mumbling to herself about how to handle her boss Vishwamithra. She noticed the conductor approaching her, pushing his weight through the crowd and mechanically repeating the words ‘tickets, tickets' through his teeth, just as he reached nearer to Vanaja he happened to notice 2 young tots, one boy and one girl hanging onto dear life to a vertical bar and then he also noticed that they were both trying hard to hide their big moist eyes and simultaneously trying real hard to remain calm and normal.

Vanaja again looked at her watch, oblivious to the children next to her in the crowded bus, she was concentrating to get her bus pass out of her hand bag and the zipper wasn’t most cooperative, she was trying to loosen her hand bag zipper with one hand while holding onto the roof handle bar with the other hand and while she was at it she heard the driver asking someone "so where are you going?" and just then she also heard 2 children wailing and someone tugging at the bottom end of her Saree.

Vanaja stopped fiddling with her handbag and shifted her attention to the two hands pulling at her Saree and was shocked to see two little children , one boy and a girl, sobbing, and through their sobs and saliva the boy among them managed to ask her help to buy them their tickets - it did not take too much time for Vanaja to recognise little Daniel and Annie.

Vanaja was totally confused , looking at the two kids, who were both her neighbours. She first looked around to check if she could find either of their parents and was confounded further when she realised they were not around, she then asked Daniel where he was going, Daniel clutched hold of Annie’s arm and through a flood of tears told her that they, both Annie and him, were running away and so they wanted her to buy them their tickets to wherever she was going.

That's when Vanaja knew almost instantly that her half day CL which she was trying to save was now more or less consumed and in fact she will probably end up being marked absent and so will have to also bear a LOP for the day .

But without wasting too much time she decided 'so be it', these children need help, and immediately shouted at the conductor to stop the bus, the conductor too by then knew something was seriously amiss, the crowd were amused and were smirking at the kids, one of them even chided the two kids asking Hey! So you both are running away? and gave out a huge laugh even as others around joined in the mirth. Daniel surely didn't seem very amused. Annie kept looking at all wide eyed and lost. Finally the conductor blew his whistle as hard as he could and barked at the driver in his telengana slang to stop the bus, the driver hearing the bark knew something was pretty serious stopped the bus to a screeching halt.

Vanaja quickly held the arms of both the kids taking them on either side and dragged the two sobbing miniatures still in their school uniforms out of the crowded bus.

XI - Missing

Daniel was holding Annie’s hand, she had her palms open and sobbing uncontrollably, they were both caned with such ferocity their tender palms were spurting blood and they were made to kneel outside their class under a hot summer sun. That’s when Danny decided that enough was enough.

Back at her home Mrs. Ezekiel was a very worried woman. Annie who would have normally reached home by noon had not turned up. It was 3 in the afternoon. She had somehow managed to come out of her 3 storied Railway Quarters building and spoke to a few neighbors who also had their children studying at Santiniketan after having picked up their children if they had seen Annie most answered in the negative, and now it was well over 2 hours since the school wound up and still there was no sign of her little Annie.

Meanwhile Danny's sister Mary too was crying as she walked home alone from the school, She had searched and searched for her little young brother who would have usually joined her after school and they would have both headed home together, hand in hand. Today, Danny was not to be found and a few inquiries that she tried at the school office only drew fiery glares from the teachers around. As she helplessly cried she was talking to herself repeating to herself through tears and saliva "Danny where are you? what will i tell Mom? Danny were are you?"  a few parents who saw Mary crying, enquired and when they were told about her reason tried consoling Mary saying maybe Danny had walked home ahead of her, taking those words of consolation she started to slowly walk back home , alone.
